SK Writers/Artists Retreats

» Retreat Application Guidelines

Applications must include:

  1. The completed application form from the retreat website.
  2. A covering letter that states:
    1. Your name, address and phone numbers;
    2. A short description of the type of work to be done at the retreat;
    3. The names and phone numbers of two referees familiar with your work and who can attest to your ability to work independently.
    4. Your first and second choice of retreat dates
  3. Writers:  10 ONLY typed pages of manuscript — include a sample of what you will be working on as well as previous work (submit your best work) within the ten page sample. All work will be destroyed after the adjudication process.
Visual artists: ten slides or CD of your work as well as a list of images that includes the title and date of work. All work submitted should be recent.
  4. A literary CV, including publications or exhibitions. Visual artists may also submit work online in a JPEG format.

All submissions must be received online or by email. Manuscript pages in excess of ten pages will not be processed. Please follow online application procedure as noted on the application form.

Applicants should note that if space is limited, previous retreat stays will determine residency, and that 8 weeks of retreat time over the past 3 years will be the guideline for adjudication, with preference given to those who have not had previous opportunities to attend. Preference will be given to Saskatchewan residents.

Applicants who apply by the deadline will be given first consideration although, if there are spaces available, applications will be considered up to three weeks prior to the beginning of the retreat period desired.

Payments can be made upon application; however, payment will be due two weeks after notification of acceptance to the retreat.

ADJUDICATION PROCESS

Attendance at an SWG retreat is a privilege and all applications are subjected to a rigorous juried process. Acceptance is determined by:

  • Quality of Work decided by the writing sample/visual images submitted
  • Literary CV and publication/exhibition history
  • Benefits to be gained from the retreat experience
  • Ability to work independently
  • Project description

Please note that this adjudication process is completed approximately two weeks after the deadline. After this, applicants are notified of their acceptance or denial. Upon acceptance, applicants have two weeks to make payments to secure their spots.

RETREAT FEES

Rising costs for our facilities means we must adjust fees accordingly. The fees for regular retreats in 2019 are as follows:

  • SWG members: $375
  • Out-of-province members: $475
  • Out-of-province non-members: $575

Note: As of August 1, 2017 CARFAC SK will no longer be subsidizing artists to attend the SWG Writers/Artists Retreats. If artists wish to apply they will need to be members of the Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild. Studio fees for artists are not subsidized and are $100 per week.

Late Fees and Payments

A non-refundable late fee of $35 will apply to all applications received after the application deadline, and will be payable at the time of application.

New! A late fee of $35 will apply to all payments outstanding as of one month prior to the start of the retreat.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellation refunds will be processed as follows:

  • 30 days or more prior to start date: 75% funds returned.
  • 14 days prior to retreat start date: 50% funds returned.
  • 7 days prior to retreat start date: 25% funds returned.

Cancellations within one week of retreat start dates are non refundable.

The Judy McCrosky Bursary
Each year, the Judy McCrosky Bursary pays the registration fee for one week of the SWG's Winter Retreat for an emerging Saskatchewan writer who would benefit from time spent in a retreat environment to focus on writing. An emerging writer is considered to be a practicing writer in the early stages of their career and has not yet published a book or equivalent. Recipients must have resided in Saskatchewan for one year prior to the beginning of the retreat.

There is no application form for the Judy McCrosky Bursary. If you are qualified and would like to be considered during the adjudication process, please ensure you check the appropriate box on the retreat application form.
