"For serious writers and artists, a two-week retreat at St. Peter's Abbey is worth five weeks in Honolulu. The time spent is simply more productive and more fun."
-- Dave Carpenter (Saskatoon)
Since the inception of the SWG in 1969, writers in Saskatchewan have recognized the need for a place where they could work without disruption. Retreats are a space for writers to come together; after all, writing is usually a solitary occupation, but the companionship of other writers can be inspiring. A pilot retreat was held in May-June 1979 at Fort San and the launch of the annual retreat program followed its success. Administered entirely by the SWG and subsidized with funding from SaskCulture and Saskatchewan Lotteries, retreats are offered several times a year for writers and artists from Saskatchewan, Canada, and beyond.
The SWG retreat is a self-directed program and all applications are juried. Complete adjudication details are available at the end of this page.
If you are travelling to the Retreats via Saskatoon or Regina and need a ride to the Retreats, please let us know in advance. We will try our best to find you a ride!
Please note that a maximum of two weeks of individual retreats and a total of four weeks of retreats per person per year is allowed.
To apply online please go to the retreat application form.

SK WRITERS/ARTISTS RETREATS
Regular SK Writers/Artists Retreats are for established and practicing writers and artists who are able to work independently. Community retreats are held in February and July. These are offered for writers and artists from Saskatchewan, other parts of Canada and around the world. Both summer and winter retreats are held at St. Peter's Abbey in Muenster, SK.
Facilitated Retreats will be offered in both July and November 2019. These retreats are intended as teaching situations, in which a Writer-in-Residence will offer guidance and advice to beginner or emerging writers.
Please read the Retreat Application Guidelines before submitting your application for any of the retreats.
To apply, please go to the retreat application form.
Note: As of August 1, 2017 CARFAC SK will no longer be subsidizing artists to attend the SWG Writers/Artists Retreats. If artists wish to apply they will need to be members of the Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild. Studio fees for artists are not subsidized and are $100 per week.

Facilitated Retreats offer a shorter retreat period for beginning and emerging writers, who are not yet at a stage in their careers to attend a regular community retreat. An on-site Writer-in-Residence provides guidance and advice for beginning and emerging writers who want a combination of writing time, instruction and feedback. Attendance at a Facilitated Retreat is considered a benefit when applying for a Community Retreat. Saskatchewan resident writers will be given preference for Facilitated Retreats. $300 is the standard fee for both SWG members and non-members as a way of assisting all writers in the province to get started in their careers.
A three-day November facilitated retreat is offered annually by SWG at St. Peter's Abbey. New in 2019, the SWG will be organizing a week-long summer facilitated retreat in July. Facilitated Retreat Information
