Writing for Children and Young Adults

Setting the imaginations of children and young adults on fire is one of the greatest parts of being an author for young readers. Learn not only the different possibilities within these audiences, some of which are less well understood, and also discover how your own stories will light up your readers. Delve into the mysteries of good storytelling, and re/acquaint yourself with the fear and joy kids feel when something happens for the first time. With a mixture of writing exercises and conversation about Alice's own experiences writing and publishing ten books, come away from this intimate class inspired and ready to take your writing to a new level. For writers at any stage in their career; you will be invited but not required to submit two pages prior to the class so that Alice can tailor the class to participants.

Alice Kuipers has published ten books for teens and children, with two more upcoming; she has published picture books, chapter books, fiction and non-fiction, along with her first Hi-Lo novel. Her chapter book Polly Diamond and The Magic Book was selected by Parents Magazine as one of the best books of the year and is described by Booklist as a book that… “brings the magic of imagination to life.” Her books have won many awards and have been published in 34 countries, and her work has been made into plays and performed on the radio. She teaches writing online and in classrooms and is a passionate advocate for young readers. She is the co-chair of the Saskatoon Public Schools Foundation Campaign.
