Spin the tale, pin the tale: a workshop for writers who have trouble getting a story started. Generative exercises will help you discover ideas you didn’t know you had. Then we’ll talk about what to do next. What does story mean? What sorts of shapes do stories take? Please bring along an object (smaller than a breadbox) that holds significance for you.

Leona Theis writes novels, short stories and creative nonfiction. Her preoccupation these days is to write prose that is serious and funny at the same time. Her story collection Sightlines won two Saskatchewan Book Awards. Excerpts from her novel The Art of Salvage were shortlisted for awards on both the east and west coasts of Canada. Leona won the CBC Literary Award for creative nonfiction in 2006, and her work has been shortlisted three additional times for the CBC award, for fiction as well as for nonfiction. Her unpublished memoir “Unsupervised Swimming” won second place in the John V. Hicks long manuscript competition. Recently, her short fiction was longlisted for the Exile/Vanderbilt Short Fiction Award. If she isn’t at her writing desk, she might be hiking, cycling, or paddling a kayak. You can find her blog, written in the voice of a character from her novel-in-progress, at AlwaysUnderRevision.com
