Call for Nominations for Saskatchewan's Poet Laureate


The Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild is calling for nominations for the next Poet Laureate. The term will run from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2016.

Criteria

The Poet Laureate will meet the following criteria:

    will have a significant body of work, including a minimum of three books of poetry professionally published by established literary presses (not self-published)
    will have achieved recognition for the literary merit of his/her work
    will have a record of public involvement in the literary life of the province (e.g. teaching; delivering workshops; giving readings; writing reviews and articles; service on arts and literary boards and committees)
    will be a current resident of Saskatchewan
    will have been a resident of Saskatchewan for at least 2 of the past 3 years
    will have means of reliable transportation

Duties of the Poet Laureate

The duties of the Poet Laureate are as follows:

    represent the literary community at officially approved events in Saskatchewan to which the Laureate has been officially invited (approximately 12 per year)
    give a brief reading each year at the Saskatchewan Book Awards Gala.
    attend state events and other special events when invited (e.g. Royal Visits, and Lt. Gov. Arts Award)
    fulfill the purposes of the position of Poet Laureate of Saskatchewan as follows:
    celebrate the spirit of the people and place of Saskatchewan
    raise the profile of writers in Saskatchewan
    elevate writing as a vocation
    raise awareness of the power of poetry and the spoken word
    act as a recognized spokesperson for writing in general and poetry in particular
    act as a respected participant in festive occasions and official functions in the province
    act as a focal point for the expression of Saskatchewan cultures (time, land, people) through the literary arts
    provide written reports as requested

Nomination Process

Please submit the following:

    A Curriculum Vitae of the nominated poet
    A list of publications
    Rationale on how the candidate meets each of the criteria
    Rationale on availability and ability of the nominated poet

Please do not send books or other material, such as newspaper articles. The deadline for nominations to be in the SWG office is 4:30 pm, Tuesday October 1, 2013.
