Aboriginal Program Coordinator

 

Position Description

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Aboriginal Program Coordinator will liaise primarily with the Program Manager and work closely with all programming staff. The Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of the development and coordination of SWG’s Aboriginal programs and services in Saskatchewan and to provide leadership in cultural awareness protocols to the membership and community-at-large.

The successful applicant will liaise with Aboriginal writers, network with First Nation and Métis communities, establish and maintain productive partnerships with stakeholders, funders and other relevant organizations, provide project support as necessary, seek funding, write grant applications and reports, and maintain databases of relevant information. Knowledge of Aboriginal literature, publishing and of the literary arts scene in the Aboriginal community in Saskatchewan is a must. Awareness of First Nations and Métis cultures and languages is a definite asset, as is someone who has experience in program design, delivery and evaluation.

This position will appeal to an energetic self-starter with excellent outgoing interpersonal, time management and organizational skills. Of prime importance is the ability to take initiative, multi-task, to be a team worker, and be resourceful. Access to a vehicle is of prime importance, as is the ability to plan, prioritize, budget and meet deadlines. Knowledge of marketing and public relations is beneficial for success in this position.


Expectations:

  • Connect with Aboriginal writers provincially and nationally
  • Hold discussions with the Aboriginal Constituency regarding programming
  • Network with agencies, organizations and establish liaisons and partnerships
  • Research sources for funding for Aboriginal writing programs and activities
  • Apply for grants for programs and establish budgets
  • Prepare reports and documents as requested by SWG’s funding agencies
  • Research current writing programs and services in Saskatchewan that serve Aboriginal people
  • Determine, create, develop, organize and  implement Aboriginal workshops, programs and events, including national events
  • Research potential markets and information on the business of writing for Aboriginal participants
  • Determine cultural awareness protocols and connections to implement Aboriginal programming
  • Maintain databases to facilitate operating SWG’s Aboriginal programming
  • Work with the SWG programming team in Regina and Saskatoon
  • Write and distribute materials for related documentations


Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with writing programs and events throughout Saskatchewan
  • Education and/or experience in writing and the arts
  • Experience in developing cultural programming
  • Strong background with Aboriginal artistic communities and community development resources
  • Knowledge of Aboriginal literature, publishing
  • Awareness of First Nations & Métis cultures and languages
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Experience in grant writing and preparing budgets
  • Strong organizational and prioritizing skills
