Julie Devaney is a Toronto-based health activist and patient-expert in the fields of disability rights advocacy and health care delivery.
My Leaky Body is a critically acclaimed show, workshop series, and book based on her experiences spending five years in and out of hospitals, propped up on operating tables and in bed in pain for weeks and sometimes months at a time. Initially diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease, she underwent intense medical therapy before having her entire large intestine, her colon, removed. She has since been re-diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease.
Julie was named as one of 2011’s Women Health Heroes by Best Health Magazine and has received national media attention. Julie blogs for Huffington Post Canada, has been published in The Globe and Mail, and has contributed to four anthologies.
