The SWG is holding a Facilitated Retreat, November 10-13, 2011, at St. Peter’s Abbey in Muenster, Saskatchewan. At the SWG Facilitated Retreat, as well as undisturbed writing time, Writer-In-Residence Leona Theis will give an introductory talk on an aspect of writing, provide one hour of one-on-one discussion for feedback on your writing and/or answers to your writing-related questions, and join in with informal discussion at mealtimes with the other participants. The Facilitated Retreat is designed as a time for you to focus on the writing you would like to do and to gain encouragement and motivation by interacting with the Writer-In-Residence and your fellow participants. The cost is $200 per person and includes a private room and all meals, as well as access to the Writer-In-Residence as described above.
Leona Theis writes novels, short stories and creative nonfiction (including memoir). She grew up in Saskatchewan and has lived here most of her life, though from time to time she goes off to live elsewhere — Vancouver, Europe, Australia, California. Her work has received two Saskatchewan Book Awards and a CBC Literary Award, as well as other awards and shortlist nominations across Canada. Her work is funny and sad; sometimes more of the one, sometimes more of the other, like life. She can be cynical; she’s most often hopeful. Leona is the creator of Always Under Revision, a meta-blog where Kate, a character from her novel-in-progress, talks about what it’s like to “be written”. The site is a peep show into the writing process and a fun place to stop and think about creativity. You can find it at alwaysunderrevision.com. Leona’s website address is www.leonatheis.com.
To apply, applicants (19 years and older) must submit an example of the writing they will be working on at the retreat, a paragraph or two describing their writing experience, and a paragraph about why they want to attend the SWG Facilitated Retreat. Payment for the registration fee can be made by PayPal (on SWG website), credit card (over the phone) or cheque and sent with the completed application form.
Deadline for receipt of applications is 4:30 p.m. Friday, October 14 2011.
Preference will be given to SWG members who have not published a book and who have never attended any of the SWG retreats. A maximum of twelve participants will be accepted.
