brendaschmidt.blogspot.ca | | | Bio | - Brenda Schmidt is a writer and visual artist based in Creighton, a mining town on the Canadian Shield in northern Saskatchewan. Her work has been published, performed, shown and broadcast across the country. Brenda grew up on a farm in the Coteau Hills of Saskatchewan. A former nurse, she also has a BA, English, from the University of Waterloo. Brenda, author of four books of poetry and a book of creative nonfiction, was the 2011 Mackie House Writer-in-Residence (BC), a featured writer at the 2011 Talking Fresh conference at Luther College in Regina (SK), faculty member of the Fernie Writers Conference in 2007 and 2008 (BC), featured writer at Writers West at Okanagan College in 2006 (BC), a poetry workshop leader, and has served on the board of directors for the Saskatchewan Writers' Guild. While living in the north, she has worked as a freelance reporter and photographer, wrote a birding column and volunteered in a recycling centre. Brenda, a naturalist, birdwatcher and active blogger, also specializes in the fine art of road trips. New in 2012: Grid, a book of poems, was published by Hagios Press in April. Flight Calls: An Apprentice on the Art of Listening, a book of essays and letter fragments, was published by Kalamalka Press as part of the Mackie Lecture and Reading Series.
