SWG History and Mandate
Founded in 1969, the Saskatchewan Writers Guild is a province-wide organization representing writers in all disciplines and at all levels of development. It is one of the largest writers organizations in Canada with a membership of over 500. The Guild's mission is to improve the status of the writer in Saskatchewan.
The objectives of the SWG are as follows:
- To promote excellence in writing by Saskatchewan writers
- To advocate for Saskatchewan writers
- To promote the teaching of Saskatchewan and Canadian literature and instruction in the art of writing at all levels of education
- To improve public access to writers and their work
- To develop professionalism in the business of writing
- To improve the economic status of Saskatchewan writers
The Guild is also the umbrella organization for several arm's-length groups, including Grain and the Saskatchewan Artists/Writers Colonies.

How to Join the SWG If you are a Saskatchewan writer, or are interested in Saskatchewan writers and writing, membership in the Saskatchewan Writers Guild is more than just a good idea... it's a must. The benefits of membership include a subscription to freeLance, the newsmagazine of the SWG, as well as access to a wide range of programs, services, and events, as outlined in this web Site.
Membership in the Guild is open to all writers and to teachers, librarians, publishers, booksellers, students, and others with an interest in Saskatchewan writing. Annual membership fees (effective 16 October 2005) are $65.00 for a regular membership and $45.00 for students and seniors
Note: Those who find it difficult to pay the fees may apply to have them waived. Please send a letter with a note on your financial circumstances. All requests will be kept confidential.
