The Saskatchewan Arts Board is pleased to announce that renowned author, Guy Vanderhaeghe, is the recipient of the 2013 Lieutenant Governor’s Arts Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts.  The award will be presented to Vanderhaeghe at a gala on Wednesday, September 25, 2013, at Regina’s Conexus Arts Centre.

“I am enormously pleased and grateful to have been chosen to receive this year’s Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts,” says Vanderhaeghe. “To find myself in the company of previous recipients, distinguished artists whose work has reflected and shaped the rich culture of our province and helped to make others beyond the borders of Saskatchewan acquainted with it, is a very great and humbling honour for me.”

Recognized as one of Canada’s finest writers, Vanderhaeghe has earned numerous awards and prizes for his well-crafted historical fiction, including two Governor General’s Awards and several Saskatchewan Book Awards. He has also received the Saskatchewan Order of Merit and been named an Officer of the Order of Canada. Please see attached backgrounder for more information.

The Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award is sponsored by North Ridge Development Corporation. Vanderhaeghe will receive a $10,000 cash prize and a limited-edition bronze sculpture by Saskatchewan artist Joe Fafard. Recipients in all other categories are awarded the sculpture and a cash prize of $5,000.

“This award is this province’s highest honour in the arts, and author Guy Vanderhaeghe richly deserves this accolade,” says Byrna Barclay, chair of the Arts Board. “He is one of the most decorated literary artists in Canada today, and his historical novels and stories resonate with audiences worldwide. Although his fame is international, he chooses to stay in Saskatchewan, where the light and land continue to inspire him. We will be thrilled to present him with this prestigious honour.”

Presented by the Saskatchewan Arts Board, the Lieutenant Governor’s Arts Awards celebrate the contributions and achievements of individuals, groups, and organizations in all art disciplines. Regina musician Jeffrey Straker is the host of the 2013 gala.
